Day 355 #Project365

December 20, 2012 by [ayu]

My little elf was very helpful and looking very happy in our last day of baking. I love baking, so these pre-Christmas baking days are one of my favourite days in the year. The house smells wonderful with the smell of cookies baking in the oven, and I truly enjoyed listening to the non-stop chatters of my little girl, who broke into Christmas songs every now and then while she dusted the cookies with sugar. My mom did a lot […]

Day 328 #Project365

November 23, 2012 by [ayu]

Nikon D90 | AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G | ISO800 | f/3.2 | 1/20 | A lamington is a dessert of Australian origin. It consists of squares of sponge cake coated first in a layer of traditionally chocolate icing, then in desiccated coconut. (source: Wikipedia) Baking Friday is here again. Lamington is one of my family’s favourites, and it’s been quite awhile since the last time I made these babies. As I expected, once my kids found out what I was doing, they came and circling close to […]

Day 265 #Project365

September 21, 2012 by [ayu]

Nikon D90 | AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G | ISO640 | f/4 | 1/160 | Who would’ve thought that it’s such a nightmare to cut jelly beans in two? The hard outer part always cracks when I put more pressure on the small sharp knife, or when it doesn’t crack then the gooey part would just changes its shape from being squeezes too hard. Luckily I brought the other jelly beans (non blue ones) to practice. 20 busted jelly beans later I […]

Day 264 #Project365

September 20, 2012 by [ayu]

This is a vision of a promise. A promise of something sweet to come. Literally, of course, and figuratively speaking. Cupcakes brings out the meaning of fun. It might be sugar-powered fun, but fun nonetheless. My daughter got so excited just from distributing these colourful paper cups on the tray. What flavour will it be? How about the topping, what’s the colour? Can I help decorate? Oh, the anticipation… We have to wait a bit  longer to see the end […]

Day 217 #Project365

August 4, 2012 by [ayu]

My kids picked a cupcake for me to bake from the brand spanking new cupcake book that I just bought today. Their choice was hardly surprising as they pointed eagerly at the chocolate one. It’s  a ‘milk chocolate hazelnut whip’ cupcake. Since I have never had  milk chocolate in my pantry (ever) I made this one using dark chocolate instead. The cake was flourless, yummy and super easy. I totally underestimated the reflecting power of the shiny chocolate ganache on […]

Day 209 #Project365

July 27, 2012 by [ayu]

Haven’t done baking Friday for awhile. Today it’s back and I made choux pastry filled with vanila custard (a.k.a kue sus). I have been missing my mom’s kue sus that I haven’t eaten for years, then I had a really bad profiterole experience last week at the local restaurant, which made me wanting it more. And then last night I watched MasterChef All Stars making Croquembouche I thought to myself (as I salivated), I think it’s time to give baking […]

Day 188 #Project365

July 6, 2012 by [ayu]

There are times when parental resistance is strong that no matter how intense offspring nagging becomes, we keep our foot down and that’s the end of it. Today was not one of THOSE time, which explained why you are looking at a bunch of lady finger biscuits in the bowl. Thanks to Ms 4 super nagging power I got off my lazy bum and made Tiramisu, as she persistently demanded. There is a reason why I don’t do a lot of […]

Day 148 #Project365

May 27, 2012 by [ayu]

After three weeks living without a dishwasher I have a new-found respect for this kitchen appliance. To spend time washing your dishes by hand might not mean like much if you only have to do it for one day. I believe I have wasted about 10 hours (feels more like 11 years and a half) just to wash the dishes by hand these past weeks (around 15 minutes washing two times a day). I hate washing dishes by hand with […]

Day 97 #Project365

April 6, 2012 by [ayu]

I find baking therapeutic. I do not do it as often as I used to because I just don’t have the time. And all those baking can only ‘work’ if I had more people around who would eat my baking goods, so I didn’t have to eat them all up my self and avoid gaining 20 kilo a week. The photo of today is a cupcake I baked yesterday (and finished frosting today) for two of my close friends who come […]

My new cookie cutter didn’t produce the perfect identically shaped cookies. Considering it’s reputation for being consistent, I can only blame myself. Or the type of dough I use. Oh well, let’s just blame the dough.

The Sorting Hat Cake

January 28, 2011 by [ayu]

We made it! Thanks to hubby as my team mate, the Sorting Hat birthday cake for our son’s 7th birthday party tomorrow is finally READY. This cake was made of eight layers of chocolate cake, 2 kilos of fondant plus enough icing sugar to cover Alaska. A special thanks to the lady from eHow website -how to work with fondant video- who pulled us through the difficult part. We are eternally grateful…
