To commit myself in the 52 weeks of Portrait Project, I knew that at some point I’d have to do a self portrait just to complete the whole portrait taking for a year experience. I knew I’d have to do it because it would be the most challenging to me, and therefore would be perfect for this project. I call it a big challenge because first of all, I feel less comfortable to stand in front of the camera than […]

The idea was to take a clean head shot of my daughter in her short do. She has been rocking this for a while now, but a couple of months ago when we decided to chop it off from her below shoulder length, we were amazed by how drastically different she looked. I love this hair on her, because it’s so easy to maintain, and light. No more 15 minutes before school hair battle trying to untangle everything and comb/braid/brush/pin/pull […]

Say good-bye to today’s sun. This was the last capture of the day. The beautiful golden light that shone through the front window just too pretty to miss. Nikon D90 | AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G | ISO125 | f/2.5 | 1/800 |

This shot was about compromises. I had the delicious late afternoon light, a bee, and the lovely lavender, but I couldn’t get rid of the step on the foreground. Cropping the step out was not an acceptable option. When I sat back and moved a bit, I lost the step, but lost the bee as well, as it was already busy buzzing elsewhere. And the angle of the light in the step-less image looked somewhat different. So I picked this […]

When you are as tall as my dog, you find out that not many things are within your eye level. Yes, there are the likes of toddlers, other Labradors, people crotches, or bums, and people’s knees when they are sitting down to look at, but the rest is either on the floor or way above your head. It is a human world after all. Understanding the above aspects, I totally get why our coffee table is one of dog’s favourite […]

The big windows in our lounge room allows a lot of light in and there is a certain time in a day, especially when it’s cloudy outside, when this room is beautifully lit by the nicest, softest, diffused, natural light. Mr 8 was not feeling too well so he stayed home for the day, and was lying down on the couch after lunch at the ‘perfect light’ time. Since he was unwell, he did not move too much, which even […]

I love candid shots. Especially kiddie ones. Unlike us adults, candid shots on kids turn up great (more often), and their characters shine through from their expression. Here Ms 4 was distracted be the funky looking seat at the mall while we were there doing the dreaded Saturday grocery shopping. She was trying out different position and I snapped her quickly as she was hanging on the ‘hole’. The structure of the seat makes an interesting frame. Photo was taken […]

The natural light at A Bite to Eat cafe this morning, as I was sitting facing the window, was so delicious it made this dish looked even yummier. The sun that came from the front window was soft and so perfectly diffused it touched everything in the room beautifully. Eclectically called Tweed, this dish of smoked mackerel, potato cake, leek spinach and poached egg, was not only photogenic, it was super delish. I 100% believed my foodie friend who happily […]

As my learning continues I find myself watching light more closely. Natural light through a window is interesting when you compare it amongst different rooms in various houses. The color of the walls, the thickness of the windows (or how clean the windows are), and the colours of the floors, they all affect the intensity and the temperature of the light in that room. I start to ‘get’ the whole “light bouncing on different surface” thing a bit better now. […]

It’s half a moth away before winter is officially here. Some of the trees had gone completely bald. You see fewer flowers, too, that was why it was quite surprising that I still found a lot of flowers still blooming in my back yard ‘jungle’. I was walking around at the back when I realised how pretty everything looked. It was around 2 PM so the sun was already at an angle this season. I took a lot of photos […]

I have done project 365 for over 100 days, and one thing I know for sure I love in photography is photographing children. Strangely, I only posted a very few children photos to date. Not that I did not take a lot of them, I consciously wanted to try to shoot other things, and posted them instead of the children photos. I feel there is a danger of specialising too much too soon if I only limit myself of photographing little children. […]
